Myths About Hair Shaving

Adolescence. When puberty hits you, you get to experience all these body changes due to your hormones. Breasts and testicles start growing, and so do body hairs. When facial hair and other body hairs grow thicker than usual, you think of shaving them. But the moment you pick that razor, your mom, or your dad, or your older sibling, or a friend discourages you and tells you that you should not shave or else hair will just grow back and be thicker and longer than they were. But you shave anyway because it was way faster than plucking your hair one by one using a hair puller.

MYTH OF SHAVING DEBUNKED

The myth was debunked and they have set it straight many years ago that shaving has nothing to do with thicker and fast hair regrowth but this persists to be the belief of almost everyone. You see, no scientific basis for that. There must have been individual coincidences that occurred that became the basis for this myth. Someone in the past might have shaved their leg hair then they grew darker and thicker upon regrowth. But that does not happen to everybody, and that may not necessarily point to the shaver. Remember that facial and body hair grows at varying degrees and times for all persons.

WHAT REALLY HAPPENS WHEN SHAVING

When cutting, trimming, or shaving hair, it looks like it is thicker but only for a bout. Since the tip is cut, it looks like the residual hair is darker or thicker and that those protruding hairs look a lot coarse. But cutting or trimming nor shaving does not in any way alter the course of regrowing the hair. The tapered hair is still the same hair that will grow again. Unshaven hair is usually fine and unsharpened. When hair grows again, what you will see first is the base, which is more granular and coarse, which is why it appears darker. One more thing, when hair has not been exposed to the environment, it is usually darker. When hair is subjected to heat, body grooming products, it can get lighter. That being said, what is factual is that there is a decrease in hair growth should one pluck or wax body hair because this causes trauma to the skin and the hair follicles especially when done repeatedly. Waxing can injure the hair bulb and cause tiny wounds since hair is torn out from its root. Since hair is torn from the root, naturally, finer and fewer hair will emerge since the coarse hair shaft is removed as well.

No study proves that shaving stimulates hair growth. That being said, other factors cause the faster growth or growth of a thicker body or facial hair. They could be genetic, hormonal, disease-related, or lack of vitamins and minerals.

At the moment, there are many ways for hair removal, most of them just reduce hair growth but tearing off the hair from its root. There is waxing, sugaring, threading, laser removal among others. They require more time and more money, unlike shaving, where you will only need your razor and you are good to go. All of them, including shaving, is effective in hair removal.
