Eight Most Controversial Work Affair

Workplace romances are commonplace. After all, you probably spend more time at the office than you do at home. It is simple to develop close, potentially romantic relationships at work. Excelle: Love Conquers All Workplaces

However, what begins as a titillating fling in the supply room can quickly derail your career and future.

Are you willing to take a chance? Then you are not alone. Celebrities, politicians, and high-level executives have been known to put everything on the line for a workplace romance.

1. Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky were involved.

The Frolic: Unless you have been living under a rock, you have lived through "Monicagate" and are aware of the events that led to the impeachment of an American president. So let's reach for the stars, shall we? After the Internet gossip column Drudge Report reported the scandal, President Bill Clinton vehemently denied having sexual relations with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. A bold denial under oath, supported by taped conversations of the alleged affair, resulted in an impeachment trial, obstruction of justice charges, and perjury allegations. Clinton evaded the bullet and remained president, leaving office with the highest approval rating of any president since World War II.

In the months after the dust settled, Lewinsky milked her momentary fame for all it was worth, appearing on morning talk shows, assisting in the writing of her side of the Clinton affair, appearing in a Saturday Night Live skit, and dieting with Jenny Craig. After failing as a designer of handbags, Lewinsky fled to London to pursue a master's degree in social psychology. Regarding Bill, I believe he is doing well.

2. Newt Gingrich & Callista Bisek

In 1998, Newt Gingrich attacked then-President Bill Clinton for his moral failings, leading the charge to impeach Clinton for having sexual relations with a much younger intern. After a long day of cheerleading for Clinton's crucifixion, the then-Speaker of the House returned home to his... mistress. Yes, the family values leader was seeing Callista Bisek, a woman 23 years his junior, behind the back of his second wife. Pot, meet Kettle. He eventually made an honest woman out of the blonde employee, but concealed their nearly two-year affair. Four ways employers could improve our relationships

The Consequence: Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. In 2007, the ultra-conservative acknowledged courting his future wife while he was still married, but he did not consider his extracurricular activities hypocritical. Clinton was ultimately removed from office not for having an affair, but for lying about it. The spin appeared to have saved his career. The Fox News analyst is reportedly considering a presidential run in 2012 with his ex-girlfriend.

3. David Letterman & Female Staffers

When personal indiscretions came to light, the comedian resorted to what he knows best: jokes. Letterman's casual admission to sex with female staff members shocked his audience, but it did not end his career. Instead, his 10-minute monologue prevented a former producer from demanding $2 million to conceal the affair. In an industry where timing is everything, the gap-toothed comedian focused on the potential blackmail to deflect attention from his own extramarital affairs. Instead of apologizing for his affair with employees and infidelity with his wife (whom he dated for 23 years before marrying), he portrayed himself as the victim of a cruel scam. How cleverly you spun it! Excel: Dating a coworker: Is it a viable option?

The Consequences: Not much. Letterman's ratings are at an all-time high (up 22% from his average at the same time last year), his blackmailer is in prison, and his wife appears to have stayed for the sake of their five-year-old son. A representative for Letterman's production company stated that its policy does not prohibit booty calls between supervisors and employees. It appears he will continue to mock other adulterers while remaining unpunished. There is no problem a top ten list cannot solve!

4. Steve Phillips and Production Helper

A well-known athlete recently checked out of a secluded sex addiction treatment facility. Moreover, it was not Tiger Woods. After an affair with a production assistant ruined his career and nearly destroyed his marriage, former ESPN analyst Steve Phillips is currently picking up the pieces. Phillips had hoped that his alleged three-night fling in July 2009 would go unnoticed, but 22-year-old Brooke Hundley was more enamored. After Phillips cut her off, she allegedly cyberstalked his son on Facebook and harassed his wife with phone calls and a letter detailing Phillips' birthmarks and the affair. The cable giant initially suspended the baseball expert, but after the scandal became public, decided to fire both parties. Phillips immediately sought treatment at the same Mississippi clinic as Woods.

After spending a month and a half in sex rehab, Philips immediately began damage control, apologizing publicly on The Today Show and promising to save his marriage. If he succeeds, it won't be the first time his wife has forgiven him for his extramarital affairs. During his tenure as Mets general manager (1997-2003), he admitted to having extramarital affairs with multiple women and was threatened with a sexual harassment lawsuit in 1998. He has not indicated whether or not he will return to broadcasting. ESPN issued no statement regarding the matter.

5. Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie

How do you unwind after a stressful day of car chases and gunfire on the movie set? Obviously, by cuddling with your co-star in your trailer. Angelina Jolie admits she fell in love with Brad Pitt on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, despite the fact that he was married at the time. Their on-screen chemistry kept us on the edge of our seats, so we weren't surprised to learn that they got together after filming wrapped. Jolie claims she kept her distance until Jennifer Aniston, Pitt's then-wife of five years, filed for divorce. Pitt coincidentally filed these documents in the same year. Hmmm.

The Consequences: Tabloid magazines owe a substantial portion of their revenue to the Angie and Brad split. The rumor mill churns out separation rumors every other week, but the couple, who have never been married, appear to be going strong. Not merely a pair of attractive faces, the charitable couple is involved in a number of humanitarian causes. They established the Jolie-Pitt foundation in 2006 to support global causes. Most recently, the foundation contributed $1 million to Doctors Without Borders for earthquake relief in Haiti.

6. Ad Exec & Ad Exec

The Frolic: Sex may not sell every time... however, it spreads freely on the Internet. Late in 2008, a video of two New York advertising executives having sex on the office floor went viral and made them internet sex celebrities. A coworker who discovered the cubicle coupling alerted his friend, who then recorded the after-hours sexual encounter. How did a 60-second cell phone recording that was sent to a handful of coworkers end up on Gawker.com and in thousands of inboxes? That is the Internet's enchantment.

The Consequences: According to HR, recording the act is worse than performing it. The company fired the voyeur for recording the fornicators (both of whom were reportedly married, and one was a high-ranking executive), but the two unnamed executives retained their positions. The producers of Mad Men must be proud.

7. Saudi Arabian Man & T.V. Viewers

The Frolic: To err is human, but if you live in an extremely conservative country, keep it behind closed doors. In 2009, the Saudi Arabian government shut down a Lebanese broadcaster after a lewd episode caused viewers to reach for their remote controls. When producers of The Bold Red Line invited a divorced airline employee as a guest, they had no idea he would bring the popular talk show to its knees by spewing erotic foreplay talk, a detailed aphrodisiac recipe, a recap of his personal sexual exploits, and even a sex toy demonstration. Producers claim they edited the video to contain the least amount of inappropriate content, but still gave the go-ahead for the lascivious chat fest. Unfortunately, it was not kosher entertainment for this strict Muslim kingdom's evening meal.

In a country that enforces strict segregation of the sexes and criminalizes having sexual relations outside of marriage, sexual immoralities rarely see the light of day. If you air your dirty laundry, you will be severely punished. The father of four is imprisoned and pleading for forgiveness after being charged with "publicizing vice." He could face up to 20 years in prison or the death penalty. His attorneys, however, intend to sue the station for misrepresentation. Meanwhile, the station is struggling to regain its license to operate.

8. British Diplomat and Prostitutes

The Frolic: A Russian intelligence agency plans a sexual sting operation. Prostitutes entice a British diplomat to check into a hotel room. Sexual activity is recorded by recording equipment. A video was leaked online. Britain was disgraced. Envoy resigns amid scandal. No, this is not a preview of the upcoming James Bond film. In 2009, Deputy Consul General James Hudson was reportedly caught in a "honeytrap" and recorded engaging in sexual activity with two Russian hookers. A link to the four-minute video titled "The Adventures of Mr. Hudson in Russia" was posted immediately on a Russian news website.

Hudson never admitted to appearing in the video, but he resigned from his position shortly after the scandal broke. British officials were outraged and accused the Russians of staging a sting operation to either blackmail Hudson or embarrass the country. Russian security services are notorious for orchestrating such operations, and British officials routinely warn their diplomats of repeated attempts to entrap them.
