Ask not what you can do for social media, but what can social media do for you?

There are 2 types of people who use social media, consumers and producers.

I know I should be a producer, I am a creator after all, but I often find myself doom scrolling instead of posting. So what can I do?

One way to approach this problem is to think of how you can leverage social media to benefit you.

In 2018 one of my biggest fears was putting myself out there, I decided to use twitter to help me with that.

I posted daily to get over that fear, I also used tweeting as accountability. If I had to post every day, I had to post what I was working on so I couldn’t slack off... It would be embarrassing!

Today I’m writing this blog post because I need help organizing my thoughts.

I have ideas about how to run and build a business, but I would like to get them out of my brain and onto (digital) paper so I can flesh them out and get feedback.

So if you’re a social media consumer and you want to be a producer, think about how you can leverage social media to make a personal improvement, instead of worrying about what you should post to get the most engagement.

Here are 3 steps you can follow:

  1. Identify an area in your life that you would like to improve
  1. E.g. exercising, getting work done, clarifying thoughts, eating healthier.
  1. Think about how you can leverage social media to help you achieve this
  1. Exercising: social media could provide accountability, so posting every day on twitter or snapchat.
  2. Getting work done: posting what you completed for the day on twitter or a discord group could help you focus on what you work on.
  3. Clarifying thoughts: Writing a blog post could help you flesh out your thoughts.
  4. Eating healthier: sharing with family members could give you a positive boost, or sharing recipes you’ve made
  1. Post it
  1. Limit the amount of time required to post, (ideally 10 minutes or less) and post it. This constraint ensures you focus on the task at hand, and makes it easy to complete, increasing your chances of doing it!

In doing this you will benefit and so will your followers.
