Describe them. How do they function?

What distinguishes them from other vitamins?

Compared to women's multivitamins, prenatal vitamins typically have higher levels of folic acid and iron. Folic acid is crucial for preventing defects in the neural tube (abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord). Anyone trying to get pregnant is advised to take at least 400mcg of folic acid every day, beginning before conception and continuing through pregnancy. Standard prenatal vitamins also contain calcium, vitamin D, iron, and vitamin E, all of which are essential nutrients and vitamins that can help prevent anemia.

Additionally, it is advised that expectant women consume 200–300 mg of DHA daily through their diet. Fish that is high in DHA and low in mercury can usually be consumed in quantities of two to three servings per week to achieve this goal. There are supplements that contain DHA and other omega-3 fatty acids if you are unable to consume this amount through your diet. Although the benefits of DHA supplementation are unknown, there is little chance that it will be harmful.

Depending on your individual needs, your healthcare provider may also advise adding additional nutrients to your diet or prescribing particular amounts of a particular vitamin.

Should I begin taking them when?

Prenatal vitamin use is strongly advised to begin before conception, ideally at least three months beforehand. This is due to the neural tube of an unborn child developing during the first month of pregnancy, frequently before a woman is aware that she is pregnant.

How long do I need to use them?

Prenatal vitamins should generally be continued throughout pregnancy and while breast-feeding. It's important to discuss all of your supplements and vitamins with your doctor before getting pregnant.

Are they safe to take while using birth control?

Yes! Prenatal vitamins are safe to take while using birth control. Even though I don't have any immediate plans to become pregnant, can I still take them? Prenatal vitamins are not necessary if you are using birth control correctly to prevent pregnancy. However, it is advised to take prenatal vitamins if there is a chance that you might become pregnant. Without intending to become pregnant, some people take prenatal vitamins to improve their general health and support strong hair, skin, and nails. Getting the nutrients your body requires can have this as an advantageous side effect. But eating a healthy, balanced diet and/or taking a multivitamin have similar effects.

Are there any negative effects?

After taking prenatal vitamins, some people experience heartburn. It's best to take this medication in this instance with a snack or right before bed. In other cases, constipation may be exacerbated by the iron in prenatal vitamins. Drink plenty of water, include fiber in your diet, and make sure you get enough exercise each day to prevent this side effect.

What stores carry them?

You can purchase prenatal vitamins over the counter or from your doctor, including your twenty-eight doctor! Most prenatal vitamins do not require a prescription, but one advantage of getting one is that your insurance might cover it.
